Companies House is closing another paper door. From 1 December 2026, objections to the strike-off of a company must be submitted online. Paper and postal objections will be rejected after that date.
If you have never thought about strike-off, this is the week to understand it. Because the change does not only affect the people objecting. It affects every company owner who might one day need to.
Companies House strikes a company off the register when it believes the company is not carrying on business. The most common triggers are a missed confirmation statement, overdue accounts, or a company that has stopped responding to official letters.
The process starts with a notice. If nobody responds, the company is dissolved. Its assets, including bank balances, pass to the Crown. Its bank accounts are frozen. Trading in the name of a dissolved company is unlawful.
An objection is how someone with a stake in the company stops the strike-off before it completes. Directors object because the company is in fact still trading. Creditors object because they have not been paid and dissolving the company would erase the route to payment. Sometimes an objection comes from a person with a live contract with a company that looks dormant on paper.
The objection works. A genuine, well-evidenced objection pauses the strike-off and puts the company back in play. A late, paper-based objection after 1 December will not.
From that date, the only accepted route is the online objection service. Companies House has stated this plainly: postal objections will be rejected. If your only plan is a letter posted in time, your plan now has an expiry date.
Three practical consequences.
First, timing. An online objection is instant, so the pressure to act moves earlier. Strike-off notices are not generous with time to begin with.
Second, evidence. The online form expects supporting material to be attached in digital form. Contracts, invoices, statements. The companies that will struggle are the ones whose paperwork lives in drawers.
Third, awareness. A company that misses the original notice will also miss the deadline for objecting to it. Strike-off is fundamentally a responsiveness problem, and this change rewards the companies that stay responsive.
Check the register. Search your company on the Companies House register and confirm its status is active. Two minutes, no cost.
Check your filings. If your confirmation statement or annual accounts are overdue, fix that before anything else. Overdue filings are the number one cause of strike-off.
If you have received a strike-off notice, act this week. Do not wait for the December deadline to matter, because the notice you received has its own deadline.
If you need to object, be ready to do it online, with digital evidence, before 1 December. Practice the route once now rather than under pressure later.
We manage filings and deadlines for every company we form and support. Confirmation statements, annual accounts, registered office, and correspondence handling, so that a strike-off notice never arrives in the first place, and if a client ever receives one, the objection is filed correctly, on time, and online.
The register is going digital whether companies are ready or not. Working with a partner who watches the register for you is no longer a luxury. It is basic asset protection.
